Luisa's Journey
Book 2
This second novel from Julie Cozens is a sequel to Christine’s Revolution. Although set between 1895 and 1903, this novel, unlike Christine’s Revolution, does not endeavour to inform the reader regarding any little-known history. Instead, this novel explores the events in Luisa Auer’s life within the historical context of the turn of the twentieth century, and as such highlights some of the social experiences and deficiencies of that time.
Luisa's Journey tells the story of Luisa Auer, Christine’s granddaughter. It is a poignant tale of courage, friendship and resilience. Believing herself responsible for her baby sister’s death, Luisa, a spirited and independent young German Jewess yearns to escape from her parent’s condemnation and an unwanted marriage.
Full of dreams for her future and with her bubbe’s support, Luisa flees from her home in Freudental and embarks on the long and daring journey bound for Australia with Wilhelm, her best friend’s younger brother. Luisa’s travels introduce her to Clara, a kindred spirit, and together they perform in a variety show. Luisa also meets her uncle and his family, who offer her the familial love she longs for.
Just when life seems idyllic, a series of unforeseen events sends Luisa's world spiralling into uncertainty. In the face of heartache, betrayal and loss, Luisa finds herself standing alone, her friends and family vanishing from her life. She must learn to put aside her own desires and summon the strength to forge a new path forward or lose everything.
